Week #1 of Cedo565 Leadership and Planning
Before this week in this new class, I often though of leaders as those who are in the public eye. The people everyone knows and goes to for things they need. I didn't really consider myself a leader. After reading the 1st chapter in our book How to Thrive as a Teacher Leader , watching Patrick Awuah's TED talk, and doing a few leadership surveys, I realize that I am somewhat of a leader. In my job as a learning disabilities special education teacher, I am often taking on leadership roles. I have taken on the responsibility to help others around me, whether I'm working with students or peers. Although I don't get in front of the whole staff and "lead" very often, I am a go to person in terms of personal issues, work related issues and technology issues. I have many people that value my input and turn to me if they need something. I think this week has shown me that those virtues that I possess are very powerful and important to the people in my life and I am a strong leader because of that.

Bill---
ReplyDeleteI too feel like this class, and specifically the book have made me understand the various roles and capacities of leadership. I certainly feel that working with special education students puts you in a role of leadership. I've read ahead a little in the book, and I think that you would really be a beneficial member of any interview team for hiring special ed. personal.
Bill,
ReplyDeleteI just wrote a long post only ot have it not load. I am going to do this short one as a test so I don't waste my time again. Here's hoping.
OK, I got the darn thing working. ARGH!
ReplyDeleteBill,
Through the inspirational leadeship of Patrick in his TED TALK we all cannot help but come to the realization that like it or not, we are all leaders. We have to lead in the classroom because it's our job to do so. We need to lead in the schools because it's alos part of our job description. We have to lead in the community because it's part of being in the "teacher fishbowl". Now Patrick calls us to action and tells us that we have to lead because it's the right thing to do and inherent as a part of being educated. I happen to agree with Patrick. Youc an do this Man!
Sincerely,
Yvette
Bill,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that typically I always thought of leaders as those who were called leaders. However, as a teacher I am a leader everyday. I lead my students to the beat learning possible, I teach them everything I know and in the best way possible. I also work with my coworkers and peers to lead them and help guide each other every day. I think it feels really nice to know that even though I may not have the title "leader," I still am one! :)
Bill you are a great leader – having worked with you a few times during this cohort I know that you are organized, fair, delegate work well, reliable, conscientious, have good time management skills, and an overall nice person to work with. I know that you would have a lot to offer your school and district. Why are you so against being a principal? Have you ever thought about taking on more leadership roles within your school building or district?
DeleteAmy, I think I could be a principal, but it just doesn't appeal to me much. I enjoy my time with my family and know that if I was a high school principal, most of my time would be spent at school. Don't get me wrong, I do love my school, but I'm not committed enough to give up the time I have with my family and other aspects of my life I do enjoy as well.
