Week 1 of Cedo 555
It has been a while since I've last blogged and now it's time to get back to work. The new class I am starting is called Professional Portfolio Experience. I honestly wasn't really sure exactly what I would be asked to do for this class. Obviously, I have to make a portfolio, but I have never made an online portfolio before and was unsure of what it would look like. The first assignment I had to do for class was to look for and describe online portfolios that would be close to something I would make for my professional life. I think this assignment was very worth while because as soon as I looked at some of the examples, the goal of what I need to do in this class clicked with me. I found four portfolios that covered a variety of subjects that I now teach. I discovered that these portfolios typically shared the persons philosophy, and introduction of themselves and their work and examples of work they have used in the classroom. After thinking back on all of the work I have accomplished in nearly a year and a half in this cohort, it looks like a portfolio would be the perfect way to share everything I have done and categorize all the work I have done in this short time. I look forward to putting this portfolio together and looking at my peers work as well.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was looking over the online portfolios I also noticed that the common theme seemed to be using a professional philosophy. I also think that an online portfolio is an excellent way to organize our accomplishments from this cohort. What better way to demonstrate what we know than showing our finished products. Also, I'd be interested to see the links that you found, given that I'm not overly happy with all of mine.
I agree that I went into this class not entirely sure of what we were going to have to produce. I understand the idea of portfolios, although, I've never had to create one.
ReplyDeleteNow that you've got a better vision of the goal and look forward to putting it together, how do you see using your portfolio outside of this class?
I think I will be able to connect some of the assignments we have done with classes that I teach. I already do that to some extent, but after I get it all together in one area, I think I might be able to pick out more items to work with.
DeleteI have made many portfolios in my time. I have also never made an online portfolio. I look forward to doing this as well. I know many times in a class I come up with a great idea and then I forget a few weeks or classes later what it was. This will be a great way to collect all my ideas in one place to reference and use in my classroom. Where were you able to find good examples that relate to your career? I struggled finding ones like we have to make or math ones for myself.
ReplyDeleteI was able to find some related to Civics, though it was hard for me to find some good Biology sites.
DeleteI have found several guides that can help with the development of e-Portfolios. One of the best is from a retired professor from the University of Alaska. It is located here:

She has some great ideas for the purpose and design of the portfolios. She also has some examples from her work. Most importantly however she runs http://eportfolios.com, which has great examples and how-to articles on the subject.
Thanks for that John!
